SEWING MACHINE BASICS: STARTING OUT
Just got your first sewing machine and have no idea where to start? Or maybe it’s a while since you’ve taken the cover off a trusty sewing machine and you just need a refresher.
Join Isabella to learn the basics of how to use your sewing machine confidently.
. You’ll find out how the sewing machine works and what you can do with it.
. You’ll learn to wind a bobbin, thread your machine successfully and how to start (and stop!) sewing a straight seam.
. You’ll practise sewing curves and corners and try some of the basic stitches. We’ll also discuss what to do when things go wrong and some basic maintenance tips.
. To finish, we will make a small project to decorate your sewing corner, and to practise your new skills.
All materials will be provided. You can use one of our beginner-friendly sewing machines. You can also bring your own machine (it must be in good working condition).
Refreshments are included, for when you need a little break. The workshop will be delivered following any current COVID guidelines. Spaces are limited to 4 so early booking is advised. Suitable for adults.
ABOUT ISABELLA
I joined the MADE team almost at the beginning and completely by accident. I came in to help set up a window display and stayed. My main creative love is for all things textile, sewing first but also knitting, weaving and hand spinning. I made all my own clothes and home furnishings and ran a fabric shop for home dressmakers in Edinburgh. I also love vintage sewing machines, the iconic old black ones that granny once owned. I have my own collection of these and have refurbished and restored many more. Through my business, Sew Vintage, I make and sell upcycled cashmere accessories and other household items such as cushions, aprons and tote bags, all from upcycled and vintage textiles and sold exclusively at MADE.
